Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few frequently asked questions about hoarding clean-up. If you don't find the answer to your question, you can always contact Seattle Hoarding. We would love to talk with you!
What is Hoarding?

Hoarding is defined as obtaining and refusing to throw out items that would normally appear to be worthless, hazardous, or unsanitary. When these items accumulate, living spaces become significantly cluttered and can no longer be used for the activities associated with that space. For example, bathtubs serve as storage for dishes. Living rooms only have narrow pathways between piles of clutter. Beds are covered with food wrappers, books, and clothes. Refrigerators are completely filled with spoiled food. Animal waste is present under the clutter. Hoarding can also be dangerous if it puts the individual or others at risk from fire, falling, poor sanitation, and other health concerns.

Hoarding can be a contentious issue among family members adding stress and frustration to an already sensitive issue. While the exact underlying causes of hoarding are unknown, there are some underlying factors including OCD and ADHD.

What will happen after I contact Seattle Hoarding?

After speaking with one of our customer services specialists, you will speak directly with our field supervisor. In both conversations, we will listen to you and learn about your situation and your needs.
If you are ready, we will schedule a free, no-obligation estimate. Most of the time, we do these estimates in person. Sometimes, we have you send photos if that seems easier or more timely.
Next, a written proposal will be provided, usually within 24-hours. This proposal provides information on the work to be done, our process, and also a price.
If you choose to allow Seattle Hoarding to help you, our supervisor will work with you to schedule the work. We will make sure all of the logistics are taken care of (e.g., ordering a dumpster) so we can get off to a smooth, productive start!
